Career Strategies for Success

Legal professionals can ask for raises like anyone else. The only real difference is whether you receive traditional performance reviews, and this usually depends on the firm's size. When, where, and how you should ask for a raise may seem complicated without a performance review, but don't let the lack of traditional structure stop you from asking for a raise annually.

Top Three Recommendations

Here are a few of our favorite tips and strategies successful paralegals use to get a raise.

  1. Demonstrate your accomplishments. Create a brag file to help you show proof of your achievements. "Brag files" record your key achievements ready to be shared with your employer. You're missing out if you've never heard of a brag file before. You can use brag files at any career stage (interviewing, asking for promotions, and raises).
  2. Tie your accomplishments to the value they bring to the firm. Next, you must demonstrate how your work contributes to the firm's success. Start by asking yourself, " How have my actions positively impacted the firm"?" Quantifying this might be challenging at first. Unlike selling cars, working in a law firm means you don't have any control over how sales evolve or how many customers you get each day. So, you might have to think about attorney and client satisfaction. Have you increased the positivity of the firm or implemented a new strategy to keep your team organized? These are the types of improvements you should emphasize.
  3. Have an amount in mind. Before you can ask for a raise, you need to know how much to ask for. This is a critical piece of the puzzle. Research the pay scale for your position. Consider the size of your firm, your duties, and the location of the firm. 'Don't fall into the trap of using unrealistic numbers. Make sure to do your research and compare apples to apples. If you are a litigation paralegal in the State of Texas and work for a solo firm, then only research salary and wages for litigation paralegals with your experience at solo firms in the State of Texas.

Conclusion

Asking for a raise does not have to be a scary, stressful, or overwhelming event. Instead, it should be an opportunity for you to learn about your skills, abilities, and the industry. The bottom line, you want to have concrete achievements to point to when you meet with the attorney to help show you deserve a raise.
